Intended Use

Ferritin is useful in the evaluation of iron metabolism and
total body storage iron and for diagnosis of hypochromic, microcytic
anemias. Ferritin is decreased in iron deficiency anemia and increased in
iron overload. In hemochromatosis, both ferritin and iron saturation are
increased.

Limitations

In patients receiving therapy with high biotin
doses

(ie, > 5 mg/day), no sample should be taken until at least
eight hours after the last biotin
administration.

As with all tests containing monoclonal mouse antibodies,
erroneous findings may be obtained from samples taken from patients who
have been treated with monoclonal mouse antibodies or have received them
for diagnostic purposes. In rare cases, interference due to extremely high
titers of antibodies to streptavidin and ruthenium can occur. The test
contains additives that minimize these effects. It is recommended that
only one assay method be used consistently to monitor each patient’s
course of therapy.
