Intended Use

Haptoglobin is useful to detect mild hemolysis. It is low in
the megaloblastic anemias, which have a hemolytic component. It is
decreased in infectious mononucleosis. Decreases can occur with hematoma
or tissue hemorrhage

Limitations

As an acute phase reactant, an increase during acute
inflammation may mask the decrease caused by concurrent hemolysis.
Steroids, androgens, protein-losing states,  produce elevation in haptoglobin,
masking hemolysis. Estrogens and liver diseases decrease
haptoglobin.
