Performing Facility

American Medical Labs, Herzliya
Pituah

Analyzer

Roche cobas 6000

Test Method

Enzymatic

AML Preferred Tube

5 mL SST gel

Storage Instructions

Refrigerated.

Separate serum from cells within 45
minutes.

Stability:

 7 days at 4
to 8 C, 40 hours at 15‑25 oC

Min. Volume

1 mL

Comments

Bicarbonate content in uncapped tubes decreases
gradually.

Turn-Around-Time

One day

Intended Use

Evaluate the total carbonate buffering system in the body,
acid-base balance. High results may represent respiratory acidosis with
CO2 retention, or metabolic alkalosis (e.g. prolonged vomiting). Low value
may indicate respiratory alkalosis as in hyperventilation or metabolic
acidosis (e.g. diabetes with
ketoacidosis).

Limitations

Only stoppered tubes can be used.  Interpretation should include
clinical information and other electrolytes; Measuring range: 2.0 to 50
mmol/L.

Patient Preparation

No patient preparation.

Reasons for Rejection

Improper collection and storage; improper
labeling

Adult Reference Ranges

22.0 to 29.0
mmol/L
