Intended Use

Evaluate lipid status and metabolic disorders; relates to
coronary heart disease risk; increased in early hepatitis, nephrotic
syndrome, hypothyroidism; decreased in malnutrition, malabsorption,
hyperthyroidism, myeloma and Tangier
disease.

 

Limitations

Large number of drugs affect cholesterol. For evaluation of
CHD, cholesterol is best measured with other risk factors. In rare cases
of gammopathy, unreliable results may be obtained.

Measuring range: 3.86 to 800
mg/dL.

Patient Preparation

Patient should be fasting 9-12 hours prior to sampling;
abstinence from alcohol 72 h is
desirable.

Reasons for Rejection

Improper labeling.

Adult Reference Ranges

Desirable: <200 mg/dL

Borderline high: 200-239 mg/dL

High = >240 mg/dL
