Transferrin is an index of nutritional
status.

 

Limitations

Increased in patients on oral contraceptives and in late
stages of pregnancy. may not be elevated in iron-deficient states in which
there is severe protein malnutrition. Increased in iron-deficient anemia.
Decreased in chronic inflammatory states, hereditary atransferrinemia,
some instance of acquired liver disease, neoplasia, and renal disease;
Measuring range: 10 to 520 mg/dL.
